Benetti's of Tomorrow

Another amazing concept design from Benetti's design innovation program which involves 16 international design firms and 27 projects. The program was set up to develop new design concepts for Benetti's custom yachts from 50m up to 90m+ in order to evolve Benetti's design and to offer their clients a wide range of new projects.

Vincenzo Poerio CEO of the Megayachts Business Unit commented "Evolving the design, the style and the family-feeling imprinted on Benetti yachts by 140 years of history is as an ambitious task. But as tireless devotees of novelty, evolution and challenge, we had no alternative. Then again, looking ahead and anticipating the market has always been encoded in Benetti's DNA. This is why we have decided to assign this challenge to the world’s most reputed yacht designers. Almost twenty firms of architects worked on dozens of designs concepts for new yachts in the 50m to 90m+ meter range, offering possible new directions and interpretations for the future design of our mega-yachts. Excellence breeds excellence".

The 16 international design firms:
  • Axis – Horacio Bozzo Design
  • Bannemberg & Rowell
  • Marco Casali
  • Cor D Rove
  • Luiz De Basto
  • Luca Dini
  • Eidsgaard Design
  • Cristiano Gatto
  • Evan K Marshall
  • Studio Massari
  • Nauta Design
  • Neo Design
  • Prima Design
  • PS+A Palomba Serafini
  • Quarto Stile
  • Design Studio Spadolini
The above design is by Luca Dini Design in Italy and measures 72m (236ft) in length. Luca Dini took the typical external superstructure lines of Benetti as starting point and around this they developed the design of the yacht. The innovative stern includes two decks and can be closed for privacy through an electrically aluminium venetian blind. The drawings and inspiration was taken from the skyscrapers where the glass is used to reject heat and the glass embedded terraces are retractable, where they designed the full height glass side (seen in the video below). The overall exterior look of the yacht is powerful and sporty with sinuous and soft lines with the interior designed by Stefano Ricci.

The image of the new Pocket Explorer from Ocean King in Italy arrived in our email yesterday and we thought it might be nice to share it with you. We will bring you more information and her specifications as it comes in, but for now you can imagine traveling the world and exploring the most remote places in this 92ft beauty. Her exterior lines have that Italian flare with a few aspects like her bow windows, taken from your traditional Dutch designed yachts.

News From The Benetti Yard

The latest news from the Benetti Yard for October and November includes the 63m FB265, the Tradition Supreme 108 and the fifth Benetti Delfino 93 'Zaphira'.

The 63m FB265

This 63m (207ft) Megayacht, currently under construction at the Livorno yard, made her first appearance last October when moved to the outfitting area of the yard. She won't be seen again until her official launch in 2014. The giant new steel hull with aluminum superstructure was created by the in house design team, and is the second largest Benetti currently in production (the largest is the FB262, a 90m (295ft) Megayacht, scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2015). The new design is similar to 'Nataly' (FB252), with the addition of another deck. The interior has four levels, and will be powered by twin Caterpillar engines, giving her a top speed of 16.5kts, with a 16kts cruising speed.

Tradition Supreme 108

The new Tradition Supreme 108 (BK001), recently transferred to the outfitting area of the yard, follows the path of the successful Tradition 105. Designed by Stefano Righini, the 32.98m (108ft) Tradition Supreme 108 has a composite structure, and for the first time in the history of the Benetti Class range, the sun deck, roll-bar and hard top are constructed using fiberglass-carbon composites, creating a considerably lighter, and stronger deck structure. Her three decks give a considerable increase in living space and on board comfort.

Ten guests can be comfortably accommodated in five cabins, an owners suite on the main deck and four guest cabins (two double and two twin) on the lower deck. As with all Benetti yachts, interior spaces are completely customizable. The twin MAN engines give her a top speed of 13.5kts, and a cruising speed of 12.5kts. The first Supreme 108 will be delivered in October 2013.

Benetti Delfino 93 'Zaphira'

The fifth Benetti Delfino 93, 'Zaphira' (BD005) was launched in October. She is easily distinguished by her magnificent blue hull and the yacht's nameplate, created by the owner himself. She has a semi displacement composite hull with an overall length of 28.5m (93ft) and a maximum beam of 7m (23ft), her external lines were designed by Stefano Righini.

She can host up to twelve guests in complete comfort, in four guest cabins (two doubles, two twins plus two pullmans) in addition to the owners suite. Two Caterpillar engines give her a top speed of 14kts, a cruising speed of 13kts, and a range of 1500nm at 12kts. She will be delivered at the end of 2012.

Any Comments,What Do You Think?

Another Scaro Expedition Yacht, the "Vultus" 40m. What do you think of this one?

Scaro Design's New 39m Expedition Yacht

Expedition yacht designs seem to be all the rage at the moment and the Turkish design studio Scaro have joined in with their beautifully designed two-toned 39m (128ft) expedition yacht. She is your modern day expedition yacht with large exterior and interior spaces, perfect for the open ocean.

There are two salon areas, the upper salon which is used as the dining area while the main salon acts as the lounge area where the aft doors can fully be opened transforming the lounge to a huge entertainment area together with the aft deck. The interiors are designed to be soft and homely yet have that attractive modern feel.

The aft deck is ideal for crowded parties and entertaining, and when not busy with the parties it can accommodate a tender of 11m (36ft). The aft garage door opens turning into a big swimming platform and the upper mast area also hides as a small wellness area including a sauna and a dayhead. Forward of the mast area is a whirlpool surrounded by comfy sunbathing beds.

She can accommodate up to 10 guests and 9 crew. The master cabin, located forward spans across two decks. The upper level is for living and sleeping while the lower (and more hidden) level has the bathroom and hydromassage pool.

"Eclipse" Leaves The Fincantieri Shipyard

The massive Superyacht "Eclipse" has just left the Fincantieri shipyard in Trieste San Marco to conduct sea trials after a four week drydock maintenance project. This relatively short but very large project took 70 workers the whole four weeks to complete, quite staggering when you think about it.

Fincantieri has now made a stand in the world of Superyachts with this project of the worlds largest Superyacht and also the launch of their 134m (439ft) Serene which took place in 2011. Serene is one of the top 10 privately owned Superyachts in the world and was a winner at the wold Superyacht awards.

In addition to construction, repair and refitting, Fincantieri activities also include the development of innovative concepts. Three concept projects, which are being developed on platforms engineered by Fincantieri, have been recently introduced. They have received great interest among the experts and are the 88m (288ft) "Virage88", designed by Andrew Winch, the 145m (475ft) "Fortissimo", a "gas turbine yacht" designed by Ken Freivoch, with an innovative design and a propulsion system capable of a speed of over 35kts, while minimizing environmental impact and the 142m (466ft) "Armonia", styled by Andrea Vallicelli and engineered by Fincantieri Yachts.

Axis Group Yacht Design's Project "Helios"

Horacio Bozzo from the Italian Design and Engineering Company Axis Group Yacht Design  unveiled their latest design the other month at the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show. Helios as she is called is his new 88m (288 feet) concept design exclusively for the Benetti Design Innovation Project.

Helios represents the latest take on Horacio Bozzo's creative language: 'The aim of the project was to design a superyacht that in spite of her size still looks as a family yacht'.

She has clean, modern sleek exterior lines with an aggressive profile towards the bow giving a strong bold look. Massive superstructures have been avoided and plenty exterior spaces with relaxing areas are scattered throughout her six decks. One of her innovative features is the unusual location of the swimming platform stairs. The stairs have been shifted forward leaving an unobstructed balcony area right on the aft main deck.

She is an efficient full displacement Superyacht designed to accommodate 12+2 guests on board and 29 crew. Twin 3516B Caterpillar engines of 2525kw and controllable pitch propellers power her to achieve 18+ kts with a trans-pacific range of 6000nm.

On the 13th of November Vicem Yachts launched the 32m (105ft) Vulcan that was christened 'Bronko'. Her delivery is scheduled for the end of the month after she completes her vigorous sea trials.

M/Y Sherakhan Plans Antarctica Trip

Sherakhan is one of the most impressive Superyachts on the charter market right now, her luxurious interior and rugged expedition exterior provide the perfect balance for adventurous guests and not to mention her up coming winter charters. This winter she will be taking on the cold waters of the Antarctic and make stops at Half Moon Island, Deception Island, Hydrurga Rocks, Paradise Harbour and Lemarie Channel. Her guests won't want to forget their camera for this charter!

This is the charter of a lifetime and throughout the cruise guests will enjoy a fantastic lecture program about the wildlife, geology, history and geography of South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. Guests will begin their adventure when they fly from Punta Arenas to Frei Base in King George Island (South Shetland Islands archipelago). Once ashore, they will visit the surroundings of the Chilean Frei Base and the Russian Bellingshausen Base. Then gather at the shore of Fildes Bay to board Sherakhan their home for the next five days.

Half Moon Island is the first stop on the cruise, it's a wildlife rich island tucked into a neat bay at the eastern end of Livingston Island. On a clear day the glaciers and mountains of Livingston Island dominate the scene along with the penguin collony.

From here Sherakhan will move on to Deception Island which is like making a journey to the moon. She will maneuver through the narrow opening of Neptune’s Bellows to enter the flooded volcanic crater. Inside is an unworldly scene that lacks life and glaciers flow down from the edge of the crater to cold water below. Guests will be able to explore the lifeless remains of a derelict whaling station and a vacant British base, or climb to the rim of the crater.

The next stop is Paradice Harbour a protected bay surrounded by magnificent mountain peaks and glaciers, which provides the perfect place for whales such as humpbacks, orcas and minkes, as well as crabeater seals.

The following day Sherakhan's captain will head up the Lemarie Channel where he will have to use his years of experience to navigate through the large iceberg's on the way to hydruga rocks. Guests will enjoy an evenings entertainment and dinner before they make their way back to King George Island the next day.

"Star Fish" Fate Now Known

Three months after the midnight fire at McMullen & Wing’s Auckland New Zealand shipyard that damaged the 50m (164ft) steel/aluminium Superyacht Star Fish, the future of the project is now known. The remaining undamaged hull, machinery and equipment assets of the project are available for immediate sale for completion by McMullen & Wing. In need of a new superstructure and interior, the vessel could be launched in 18 months, offering a new owner an outstanding high volume custom expedition yacht, fully warranted by her original award-winning New Zealand shipyard, at a very substantial discount from normal new build cost.

The Star Fish design is a larger development of the spectacularly successful and highly awarded 45m (147ft) Big Fish, built by McMullen & Wing for the same owner, Richard Beattie. Sharing the same high efficiency displacement hull form, the vessel offers incredible volume, stability and outstanding sea keeping characteristics proven over Big Fish’s 60,000nm of cruising and astonishing charter record.

Star Fish was 75% complete at the time of the fire, and due for launch in March 2013. Her steel hull and aluminium superstructure were complete, faired and painting was in progress. Interior accommodation was well progressed, electrical and electronic systems underway and machinery installation mostly complete.

The fire gutted the interior, which has now been removed. Damage to the superstructure was sufficient to warrant replacement of the entire aluminium fabrications, which have already also been largely removed and discarded. The completed steel hull was essentially undamaged. The engine room, which was 95% complete, was also saved, with only very minor impact which can be wholly restored.

In financial terms, repair and reinstatement of the fire damage to brand new condition represents about half the total cost which had been expended at the time of the fire. The remaining value post-fire, comprising steel hull, engine room machinery & fitout, extensive undamaged equipment inventory and design investment, has been assessed at over US$14m. It is available for purchase at a mere fraction of this value.

Amazing Pictures: "Quattroelle" on Sea Trials

On the 23rd August 2012 Lurssen launched Quattroelle (project Bellissimo) and she went on sea trials from 23rd to 25th October. Sold and supervised by the technical team of Moran Yacht & Ship her delivery is scheduled for this month, November 2012.

Quattroelle is the first Lürssen yacht designed by Nuvolari Lenard, who are responsible for the exterior as well the interior design.

"Quattroelle" stands for Love, Life, Liberty and Luxury.

She is a successful combination of elegance and sporty looks well on the way to become Classic.
The size of the yacht with its massive volumes was a challenge, but with careful volume distribution and a proportion study, Nuvolari Lenard has achieved a sleek appearance of the yacht. The funnel design reminds us of the air scoop of a formula one car and with its inverted shape creates the distinctive silhouette of Quattroelle.

Exclusive: The Story of Pendana, Part 2

This is part two of an exclusive five part series spread out over the next four months about M/Y Pendana, her passionate owners James and his wife Claire and the planned expedition that James and his family are planning, which is to cross the notorious Tasman Sea at the end of the year.

The excitement in the Pendana camp is most certainly building since I last spoke with them and James mentioned that while Pendana had plenty of spares aboard there was a lot still to do. James is certainly approaching this trip with meticulous detail and is leaving nothing to chance. With a little over four weeks until they cross the Tasman Sea he commented that he was pleased he started the preparation phase as early as he did. James said, "I strongly believe that bravado and sticking to plans in the face of a bad weather or common sense is for those whom clearly have yet to experience the real power of the ocean and what can potentially go wrong. There will be no heroics aboard Pendana as the reality of being stuck in heavy seas and strong winds is not wasted on me."

In preparation for the crossing, James purchased a number of items, some of these being a new ParaTech Sea Anchor in case he lost the use of his main engine and also his hydraulically driven Duncan Drive. With the use of the Sea Anchor he could at least keep the bow of Pendana into on-coming seas making the investigation of whatever went wrong not only safer but more comfortable. He also bought a handheld satellite phone as a back-up to his KVH V7 Satellite system and updated his two ditch bags so that survival in the life raft for a period of seventy days for three adults and two children was achievable. Two medical kits were also updated to include all manner of things from Class A medical injectable drugs through to airway breathing tubes. James mentioned that just about the only thing he didn’t have was the operating table. New dive gear was also bought in case the main shaft became entangled in something that needed to be cut away.

James mentioned that he was surprised that there were simply so many things one needs to do to plan for a trip like this. As Pendana will be responsible for our safety at sea she will need to be in tip-top shape for the crossing. Pendana’s main engine, a Cummins N14, her two Onan 21.5KVA generators, her air-conditioning and heating units, her hydraulic Duncan ("Get Home") Drive, water filters, Offshore Marine Water Maker, her bilge pumps and emergency hydraulic bilge pumps, her water maker, her fire suppression system, electronics, ABT stabilizers and satellite communications will all need to be tested and re-tested prior to departure to ensure they are in good working order and that any spares required are sourced and securely stowed prior to departure. In short, everything from head to toe will need to be checked thoroughly as there are no second chances when one is 500nm offshore.

Nordhavns are famous for being built from the ground up to cross oceans and, as such, James is confident that Pendana will carry them across what is a fairly notorious piece of water in safety and comfort but James made it clear that to over-estimate his confidence and under-estimate the preparation could spell disaster for everyone aboard, hence all of the above work will be carried out and planned for carefully during the last few weeks in November.

Mega Yacht Global will bring you part three in early December as we re-join James and his family just prior to departure for New Zealand. For more information on Pendana visit www.pendana.net

Feadship's "Helix" Makes History In China

The 45m (147ft) Feadship Helix has just made history in becoming the first large foreign registered yacht to be allowed to cruise the Pearl River in China. Feadship has already made history this year by being the first 'Western' superyacht builder to receive orders from Mainland China. Also Helix was the first brand new Feadship to visit China where she starred at the Hainan Rendezvous and the Nansha International Boat Show. Next stop for this history breaking Feadship is the China International Boat Show in Xiamen from 2nd - 5th November 2012.

The historic trip to explore the Pearl River in the Guangdong Province of China made Helix the first superyacht to navigate this famous river delta. She berthed in the city of Nansha, where European traders kept Folly Forts in the 17th Century to trade with the mainland Chinese. Today Nansha is a thriving metropolis and a replica of an old Chinese fort serves as the marina clubhouse. This was the ideal location for the city’s first boat show, which took place in early October and where large crowds admired Helix’s unprecedented quality levels.

"As far as we can determine no pleasure vessel over 30 metres has ever sailed up the Pearl River," says Feadship’s head of marketing, Francis Vermeer. "There may have been some wealthy Dutch traders who kept a yacht in the Canton area during the 1600s – after all, the first pleasure yachts were created by the Dutch a century before that! But Helix has certainly made history for this modern era, and this state-of-the-art Feadship has been very much appreciated by the new wave of yachting enthusiasts in China."

VSY Win Award At The Genoa Boat Show 2012

After her massive success and reception at the Monaco Yacht Show, Stella Maris, VSY’s flagship, lifted her anchor and headed down coast to take part in the opening weekend of the Genoa Boat Show. She measures 72m (236ft) in length and was crowned undisputed flag ship of the Show.

The Viareggio based shipyard was honored with a very prestigious award, where one of the Owner/Directors of VSY, Cristiana Longarini, was awarded the Yacht Capital Marina Yachting Award 2012 in recognition of her new model of management based on her ethical approach to integrated sustainability.

In thanking the sponsors of the evening, Cristiana Longarini underlined the importance of this award as a recognition of the policy the company had embarked on and pointed out that she accepted the prize on behalf of the entire shipyard.

"For us, sustainability means discovering new routes and as history teaches, courage and passion alone redesign the maps necessary for new ways forward."

Feadship "Musashi" Wins ISS Award

Larry Ellison's beautiful 87.78m (288ft) Feadship Musashi has just won the International Superyacht Society award for 'best motoryacht over 65m'  and 'the best interior'. The awards ceremony took place in Fort Lauderdale and caps of an excellent year for one of the largest Feadships to date.

Delivered in the spring of 2011, the magnificent Musashi is the perfect example of the flexibility Feadship clients enjoy when designing a custom build. You can see in the image above, the distinctive floor to ceiling windows throughout the decks that also featured in Larry's previous Superyacht 'Rising Sun', showing the flexibility of a custom built Feadship. As for the interior Larry's love for Japanese design and art flows through the yacht in an art deco style that's emphasised by the abundance of natural light.

Musashi in addition to her ISS award has also won a Neptune prize at the ShowBoats Design Awards, was named Best Custom Built Yacht at the Asia Boating Award, and received the World Yacht Trophy in Cannes.

Quatroelle Leaves For Sea Trials

Lurssen's Quatroelle headed out on sea trials last week, see the video below. She was launched on the 23rd of August 2012 and measures 85m (279ft) in length. You can see her shear size by the contrast of the people standing on the bow in the video. Very little is known about this yacht still as she has been kept very quiet, but what we can tell you is that her construction was supervised by Moran Yacht & Ship and her beautiful yet different exterior lines were designed by Novulari Lenard as well as her fresh contemporary interior.
