Scheherazade Wins Shipyard Cup 2012

The Shipyard Cup began in 2002 with support from founding sponsors Hodgdon Yachts of East Boothbay, a Maine and Boothbay Region Boatyard of Boothbay Harbor. With several million dollars worth of boats competing for top honors, The Shipyard Cup like many other big boat races is held in the 'Corinthian' tradition celebrating the 'true spirit' of yachting.

Scheherazade had a great few days of racing out on the water and outmaneuvered her competitors to take first place line honors on Sunday and winning the overall Shipyard Cup X. They recieved the famous engraved bucket trophy with a bottle of Dom Perignon. The bucket was then filled with the champagne and passed around to the winning crew.

The Final results were as follows:
  • 1st Scheherazade - 154ft
  • 2nd Rapture - 100ft
  • 3rd Whisper - 67ft
  • 4th Virago - 99ft
  • 5th Tenacious - 115ft
  • 6th Sumurun - 94ft
  • 7th When and If - 64ft
Sumurun received the annual clew award for managing to board their charter guests underway 2 minutes before their starting time and still crossed the the line 1.5 seconds after the gun, quiet an achievement. Some of the other entertaining awards went to Rapture for their wing on wing downwind run on the first day (Wingin' It Award) and to Scheherazade for their tactical fake jibe that smoked their nearest competitor (Best Smoke and Mirror Award). Great fun was had by all and next year's Shipyard Cup will bring more fun and excellent sailing.
