New Designs For McMullen & Wing 50m "Big Star"
McMullen & Wing have released new designs and layout options for the 50m (164ft) steel expedition yacht "Big Star". As you all know she suffered a set back in her build process due to a fire at the yard in New Zealand but she is partially completed with a price tag of US$30m and can be completed is less than two years for an interested owner.
Central agent Peter Brown, of Burgess in London, is excited to be promoting the project, "Big Star represents an outstanding opportunity to commission a prestige custom luxury explorer from one of the world's finest shipyards at a significant discount with a substantially reduced delivery time of less than two years."
Big Star was designed in partnership between McMullen & Wing and Gregory C Marshall Naval Architects. Like her little sister "Big Fish" she brings together the luxury of a modern superyacht along with the capabilities and hunger to explore the worlds oceans.
Along with her bold exterior styling she will feature a large 6m aft pool seen in the image above, extensive teak deck space and an owners suite aft on the bridge deck, similar to the owners suite on Big Fish.

M/Y Big Fish - Sold
The adventurous 45m (147ft) Megayacht Big Fish that was launched in 2010 by McMullen & Wing has just been sold by Y.CO. Big Fish is in pristine condition and is one of the most traveled yachts in modern times, and among the most active charter yachts since her delivery in July 2010.
If you think of the most beautiful exotic and out of the way places in the world the chances that Big Fish has been there are pretty high. Some of the places and trips she has been to over the last 2 years are:

The International SeaKeepers Society
The International SeaKeepers Society is a non-profit organization of international opinion leaders dedicated to the protection, preservation and restoration of our oceans through the collection and distribution of oceanographic and atmospheric data.The organization was founded in 1998 by a small group of yacht owners who were horrified by the deteriorating conditions of the seas. Their goal was to develop a compact, automated and cost effective ocean and atmospheric monitoring system that they could install on their yacht to help provide valuable data to scientists on the health of the worlds oceans. This was a genius idea because usually this data can only be obtained from research vessels. With their mega yachts traveling to remote places of the globe they could now provide valuable data from places not usually visited by research vessels.
The system is called the SeaKeeper 1000 is now installed in more than 45 locations around the world including yachts, cruise ships, ferry's, buoys and piers. It is endorsed by the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization. NOAA and the U.S National Weather Service continue to purchase the SeaKeeper 1000 for their vessels.
One of the SeaKeepers yachts is the well traveled 147ft Big Fish owned by Hong Kong based businessman Richard Beattie. The yacht has traveled the South Pacific, Atlantic, Med, Antarctica and South America collecting some valuable data while on its journeys.
The system can be installed on your yacht for around 30,000 dollars and then an annual calibration of the system for 10,000. The system is housed in what looks like a large electrical breaker box and while you are enjoying your travels and holiday you are all the time contributing to protecting the wolds oceans.

"BigFish" has a big sister the 164ft "StarFish"
Aquos Yachts and McMullen & Wing have teamed up again for the new construction of StarFish the big sister of their previous Mega Yacht BigFish. Aquos Yachts have just released the first renderings of the new yacht that is due for launch next year. StarFish will be 16ft bigger than BigFish at 164ft Vs 148ft respectively.She will be similar to BigFish in looks and design and will have a lot of the features that have made BigFish stand out as such a popular yacht. These features include multiple balconies, fold down extension and large windows create an open feeling and let in natural light. Their is plenty of outdoor space on this yacht for owners and guests to enjoy alfresco dining, or relax in the pool on the aft deck. She will be able to accommodate 12 guests in 6 cabins, with the owners cabin froward on the upper deck with with wrap around windows forward that give spectacular views. She will have a range of 9200nm at a speed of 8kts. Hopefully the owner of this new yacht will follow in the footsteps of BigFish and use the yacht to its exploration capabilities.

Two Gates, Two Oceans
The two main Oceans of the world the Atlantic and the Pacific are join by two passages that MegaYachts and ships can navigate to go from one to the other. These passages are the Northwest Passage and the Panama Canal. these strips of water provide a fast and efficient route from one Ocean to the other. The Northwest Passage is more extreme and expedition and exploration style yachts only attempt this crossing with their re-enforced ice breaking bows.
The Northwest Passage has been navigated since the early 1900s and was first navigated by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen between 1903 - 1906. The Northwest Passage from west to east runs through the Bering strait, the piece of water that separates Alaska and Russia. From there it runs through the Chukchi sea, Beaufort sea and then through different waterways that go through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. There is between 8 and 10 different routes through the Archipelago, and from here the passage goes through Baffin Bay and the Davis Strait into the Atlantic Ocean. Only some of these routes can be used through out the year, it depends on the ice pack and how far south it has traveled.
Up until 2009 the Northwest passage could only be traveled at certain times of the year and due to climate change there is now more water to navigate. Now yachts without ice breaking bows can attempt the passage but it is still left up to the expedition yachts.
MegaYacht Octopus 412ft owned by Microsoft's Paul Allen filed plans with the Canadian coast guard to attempt the passage in September 2010, and was then seen ancored at the northern tip of Baffin Island waiting for it crossing of the passage.
Another MegaYacht that is thought to be preparing its self for the crossing this winter is Big Fish in their trip to circumnavigate the globe. The other Passage between the Oceans is the Panama Canal.
The Panama Canal was built from 1904 - 1914 and is 77km long which goes from the Atlantic Caribbean Sea to The Pacific Gulf of Panama. The construction of this canal was a revolutionary break through in shipping from east to west and west to east. The time was shortened considerably for the ships. The time for ship and MegaTachts to travel from New York to San Francisco has more than halved from 22,500nm to 9,500nm. Close to 1 million vessels have passed through the canal since it opened. The yacht that is max
ed out to the limit of what the canal can hold is called a Panamax, so this is where the recently launched Hetairos by Baltis Yachts got its project name Panamax.
There are many superyacht that have made this short journey through the canal so they can go and explore the Pacific and what it has to offer. Some places that yacht will go to are the Galapagos Islands, South Pacific Islands and then on to New Zealand and Australia.
The first attempt at building the Panama Canal was from the French in 1880 but construction was stopped due to the workers suffering from disease. Then the American re-started the canal in 1903 and was completed in 1914. In December 1999 the control of the canal was handed over to the Panamanian Government and is now run by the Panama Canal Authority

The Travelling Bug II "Big Fish"
This MegaYacht since it was launched last summer by the New Zealand shipyard Aquos Yachts has been on the go exploring untouched and hard to get to places of the world. Big Fish is 148ft long and is one of the first type of yachts to be called a Luxury Expedition Vessel (LEV).
She is owned by Richard Beattie a British, Hong Kong based businessman. The designer that was involved to make the owners vision come to life was Greg Marshall. He has also designed the next yacht that is to be released by Aquos Yachts in 2012 is "Star Fish" 164ft that holds the same title of a luxury Expedition Vessel.
Big Fish from being launched left New Zealand and headed straight for Papeete in the Society Islands for the start of her exploration journeys. she has all ready visited the Antarctic and the Amazon and has plenty more trips lined up. Apart from being used by the owner she is available for charter and has more exotic places are in her schedule for the next year.
She is currently in Northern Europe and can be found on yacht tracker and moored at the island bornholm at the coastal town of Ronne. She will be in the Baltic sea until mid August when she will start to make her way down to the Med to attend the Monaco Yacht Show which start on the 21st of September.
She will stay in the Med until November before she heads across the Atlantic for the start of the Caribbean season. From here it it anyone's guess where her next stop will be. There was talk of plans to attempt the northeast passage across the top of Russia. This would be the first ever yacht crossing of the northeast passage.

Some features of this great yacht is it has a range of 10,000nm which means it can circumnavigate the globe by only having to stop once to refuel. she has 5,500sq ft of living space and with a beam of 32ft.
Other features include a gym, jacuzzi, and a 28ft tender that can bring you even closer to those icebergs. She has 5 guest cabins that can accommodate up to 10 guests and with a crew of 12 who will ensure that you will have an unforgettable experience.
