Sanlorenzo Splashes Again

The Italian shipyard Sanlorenzo has splashed their recent yacht, The first in the SL94 series hit the water yesterday the 30th August. This is the 9th boat to be launched this year by the yard and a few months they had a triple launch of yacht for three very happy Russian owners.

The SL94 is 28.8m which in the series name tells us she is 94ft. The designer is Francesco Paszkowski who worked closely with the in house team to come up with this contemporary design. She has large windows and portholes which bring natural light inside the yacht making for a very pleasant interior. Some of her features include a flybridge with an option of a hard top and also a large spacious aft garage to house the tender and water toys.

The SL94 can accommodate 8 guests in a full beam open plan master cabin, a VIP stateroom and two twin cabins all on the lower deck. She will have a top speed of 27kts and a cruising speed of 25kts. She will be making her debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in September.

This yacht series will certainly give other yacht series of similar size (Wesport 98) a run for their money in every department and will most lightly come out on top.

Air the 81m (256ft) Mega Yacht that was launched by Feadship in April of this year is up for charter in Feadship's charter division on their web site. Her charter price is 750,000 Euro per week. Air is the largest Feadship ever to be made available for charter and she is sure to be a major hit on the charter market for years to come.

New launch by Eurocraft Yard in Italy

Thanks to Boat International for this picture of the newly launched Baron Trenck 142ft. She was launched by the Italian shipyard Eurocraft this week. She is the latest expedition style hull to hit the water in the world of Mega Yachts.
Not much is known about this yacht yet but she can accommodate 10 guests in a master suite on the main deck, two doubles and two twin staterooms on the lower deck. She will have a top speed of 14kts and a cruising speed of 12kts.

By first glance at the yacht it looks like three different yachts in one with the layout and difference in the style of windows, kind of like it was patched together. It is probably a yacht that you will either like or hate. Its big bow (like the bow on Andrea the Delta 126ft expedition style yacht) will surely get some use if the owner who purchases it has in mind of exploring the cold places of the world. She is currently up for sale for 16.3 million Euro on the boat international web site by Ocean Independence.

Reader's Top Three Mega Yachts

Thank you all for the emails about which yachts you would like to see. If you have any questions about any Mega Yachts please email us at Mega Yacht Global our contact can be found on the contact page.
Below are your top three Mega Yachts. Enjoy

Pink Shrimp

Pink Shrimp 104ft was built by Jemison Marine in 2000 and then refitted in 2010. She was commissioned and designed to be able to be very low maintenance and to be run by a minimum crew. She has a crew or 4 and can accommodate up to 10 guests. She has a max speed of 12kts and a cruising speed of 9kts with a range of 4,000nm.
Pink Shrimp was listed in June 2010 for sale with Fraser Yachts but is now currently in the hands of her new owner who spends most of the time between Sardinia and the South of France. Also the owner owns a Luca Brenta 42ft day sailor and can be seen docked along side when at a marina or been towed of the back when traveling.
Pink Shrimp is an expedition style yacht with the mix of a trawler fishing boat, probably where the name originated from. The interior in very simple and modern and with the pale colors and white walls give a very open and tidy feeling.

Utopia

Utopia 234ft Feadship launched in 2004 was spotted by one of our readers anchored of one of the Balearic islands Formentera during the week. Currently the yacht is in Palma Check it out on Yacht Tracker.
After being launched in 2004 she went through a major refit where she had the sun deck extended and the addition of a detailed staircase in side. The yacht was up for sale in 2009 by Edmiston & Company but was purchased for 52.5 million Euro in early 2010. The interior consists of dark woods like oak and walnut with a mix of light cream colored fabrics.
She can accommodate 12 guests in two double suites, three singles and the owners suite which is on their own private deck with 180 deg views. Outside on the deck Utopia boasts a helicopter pad, plenty of seating and sunbathing areas and a large jacuzzi on the sundeck up top.
She has a top speed of 16kts and a cruising speed of 14kts with a range of 5,000nm.

SKAT

SKAT 233ft Lurssen launched in 2001. This Mega Yacht you either love or hate, personally I think this is one of the most extraordinary and striking yacht on the sea today. Her project name was 9906 and is displayed on the aft side of the hull in a military style font. This yacht could easily be mistaken for an military destroyer with its sharp and angled lines.
The owner of this yacht is Charles Simonyi who was the chief Architect in Microsoft until he left in 2002 and founded his own company International Software.
SKAT has a max speed of 17kts and a cruising speed of 15kts. Espen Oieno was the designer and she can accommodate 10 guests and has a crew of 16.
Some of the features that are aboard SKAT are a gym, helicopter, and elevator the serves all four decks, Jacuzzi, and jet skis. There is an observation platform with helm control half way up the main mast.

Too Big or Not Too Big That is The Question?

Roman Abramovich's Yacht "Eclipse" 557ft it is currently the largest privately owned yacht in the world, but is it too big? Antibes port authority think so when she was refused entry into the port due to the fact that the Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal Alsaud's yacht "Kingdom 5KR" 265ft was docked there.
The port authority were asked by the crew of Eclipse if it could dock beside Kingdom 5KR but they were told that there was not enough space for the two yachts and that they were too big. The space where Kingdom 5KR was docked was the only space in the harbour big enough to dock Roman Abramovich's giant yacht.

A source at the port said that " He is always welcome to dock his yachts here so he can go to his villa on the sea front, but a yacht of this size its just not possible."

So Eclipse had to anchor just off shore as seen in the above picture and Roman Abramovich and his guests had to go ashore by a tender. Is this yacht to big? Below is a picture of the Princes yacht Kingdom 5KR.

"Not New But Still Got It"

This is the MegaYacht "Let it be" 154ft Heesen which was launched in 2006, shows that it can still keep up with the best of them even though its six years old. Its smooth lines that are portrayed through the side windows and the decks, and her two tone paint job show the great work that the Heesen yard produce and still do. You only have to look at some of their newest launches to see this, "Satori" 164ft.
Let it be, has an interior is a contemporary combination of walnut and cherry wood with light cream, off white and shades of brown. Her dinning area in the salon can accommodate 12 guests to enjoy their meal. This area is well designed and gives a spacious feeling.

She can accommodate her guests on the lower deck in two VIP state cabins one double and one twin, two twin cabins, and the owners cabin forward on the main deck where there is his and her bathrooms. There is aft lounging area on the main deck and a jacuzzi on the upper sun deck. "Harbour Island" 180ft launched by Newcastle Shipyard

Last week Newcastle Shipyards launched their newest and largest yacht to date. Harbour Island 180ft yacht, she is hull number one in the new 5500 series hence the length 55m. She is reported to be the the largest volume 180ft MegaYacht that is currently available for charter at a rate $425,000 per week. Her first charter season will be the winter Caribbean season where she will head after she makes her debut at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in October.

Looking at her exterior design by Murray & Associates, shows a resemblance in certain aspects to the Trinity 164ft series and also to the Oceanco "Lady Christina" 204ft which is currently up for sale with a price reduction of $5,000,000 to $39,500,000. Harbour Islands bow windows look like the bow and windows on a Trinity 164ft and the rest of the body has similar lines and style to "Lady Christina".

This mixture works well and Newcastle Shipyards have produced a very stylish yacht that is sure to be a big hit in the charter market this season.
There are six state rooms two of which are master suites which a located, one forward on the main deck and the other on the upper deck. The other four state rooms are on the lower level deck. She also boasts an infinity pool on the sun deck which is the upper most deck. Due to all of her toys and tenders being stored in the aft garage, this leaves plenty of room on the decks for guest to enjoy the full space of the decks.
The garage is lined with teak and can be transformed into a beach club (all the rage on new MegaYachts now) when the tenders and toys are removed. The yard hasn't released and photos of the interior but it has been designed by Claudette Bonville Associates and its sure to be of the up most quality.

Royal Huisman Shipyard

THE SPIRIT OF INDIVIDUALITY

Some words that come to mind when you see the name or hear the name Royal Huisman are Quality, Individuality, Exclusivity and a true passion for Perfection. Last week I had the privilege of being at the yard and to see the layout and the friendly, helpful and enthusiastic employees just shows that this yard has got it right. They produce some of the best yachts in the world and would be down to the efficient work, attention to detail and perfection.

"The original Huisman yard was established in 1884 to build small wooden working boats. Some 125years later and having been awarded the "Royal" prefix on its 100th anniversary. Royal Huisman now builds luxury custom yachts that are widely regarded as the finest in the world"

The yard is now in the fourth generation of family owner-management and looks like it will continue in the family for many years to come. The yard have built all different yachts over the years, from modest cruising yachts to whitbread round the world, to the luxury superyachts of today. Some of the best known Royal Huisman yachts of today are as follows:

  • Maria Cattiva, 130ft, 2002
  • Athena, 295ft, 2004
  • Antares, 131ft, 2005
  • Gliss, 104ft, 2006
  • Meteor, 169ft, 2007
  • Ethereal, 190ft, 2009
  • Hanuman, 138ft, 2010
  • Twizzle, 188ft, 2011
Some of the new projects that are going on in the yard include Gitana 142ft performance cruise type superyacht and two modern classics Spirit of Tradition Ketch 176ft and Classic Cutter Rigged Sloop 120ft. Both of these yachts are designed by Gerard Dykstra & Partners with the interior by Rhoades Young. Another project that is in the pipe line at the yard is the Windjammer project 243ft, a modern yacht but classic tall ship look and feel.
There was only one downside to the yard and that was its location for launching the yachts. The yachts have to be but on a barge and transported through the canals to really be officially launched.

A Tradition of Excellence

Galileo G is the second boat launched in the Vitruvius Series by Picchiotto & Perini Navi Group. Galileo G is 183ft which is slightly larger the the first yacht Exuma 164ft, which was launched in this series. Galileo G stands out which her two tone paint job with a dark blue hull with white decks makes her a very sleek and stylish yacht (very Italian looking yacht).

This yachts hull is specially designed for exploring the coldest areas of the globe. Her owner intends to navigate the North West Passage and the Baltic sea in the winter. You can read about the north west passage in one of the previous articles " Two Gates, Two Oceans ". 1960s Yacht "Al Diriyah" at No.66

This 1960s MegaYacht Al Diriyah built by National Bulk Carriers in Kure, Japan has been spotted in the Med in Valencia Spain. She is currently ranked at No. 66 in the largest privately owned yachts in the world measuring in at a length of 258ft.

Al Diriyah was built for an American shipping magnet Danial K. Ludwig under the of Danginn. Since then she has bee sold a number of 4 times. first she was sold to Charles Revson of Revion cosmetics, who changed her name to Ultima II. Next she was sold to a European banker who changed the name to Serendipity, then the yacht was brought by the Saudi billionaire Nasser Al-Rashid who changed her name again to Massarrah. Finally her current owner is Sheik Ahmed Yamani.
She can accommodate up to 16 guests and a total of 34 crew and with a top speed of 15kts and a cruising speed of 13kts gives a range of 5500nm. The yacht is currently flies the flag of Saudi Arabia and is registered in Jeddah.

This yacht unlike the more modern MegaYachts will find it hard to turn peoples heads for its great looks, but only for its sheer length. She might appeal to some tastes but she is in need of a refit to update her for this modern world. Keep a look out for Al Diriyah in the Med and follow her route.
