Moonen Launches 42m Sofia

Moonen shipyards in the Netherlands have just launched their largest Superyacht to date, the stunning 42m (138ft) Sofia for a repeat client. She will now start sea trials with a delivery scheduled for November, after which she will make her first trip across the Atlantic for an extended cruise in the beautiful waters of the Caribbean. She is far from your average Superyacht as she features a unique 3 seated submarine that's located on the aft beach club deck, this is sure to wow onlookers wherever she goes.

The launch of Sofia was attended by the owner himself, who expressed his delight with the yard during a short acceptance speech. This is the third major Superyacht that he has built at Moonen and has confessed that he is already considering possibly ordering an even larger project sometime in the future. With these plans Moonen will be increasing their building capacity, so Sofia might not hold the size record at the yard for much longer.

Not long after the construction began the owners decided to extend the yacht by a further four feet in order to carry her 3 person submarine, 1 captain and 2 guests that's built by U-boatworx. This orchestrated one of the most creative and innovative design features that we have seen on a Supeyacht, the launching crane for the submarine. The crane is hidden under the aft deck and can be opened out to launch the submarine. This feature also doubles up to form an easy access dock for the tender by extending out over the water from the stern.

There are many high tech features on Sofia, including an integrated foil bridge, a full kaleidoscope video server with multi-room control (including lighting, blinds and climate control) via iPad, a galley equipped with professional stainless steel equipment, a thermal camera on the top mast and a MOB (man overboard) system with personal tracking. She is a very exciting yacht and we are looking forward to seeing her interior styling and images of her sea trials in the future.

She will be able to accommodate 10 guests with the owners full beam suite forward on the main deck, with the guest accommodation on the lower deck consisting of 2 double and 2 twin cabins all of which are en-suite.

Alloy Yachts Sign 44m Megayacht

Alloy Yachts announced that in the last week of August they signed a contract for a 44m (144ft) Sorgiovanni Design displacement Megayacht. The project, known as AY54, will be the first time this customer and his experienced team have built with Alloy Yachts. During the contract negotiation at the yard, the owners representatives were so impressed with Alloy Yachts that they believe Alloy would deliver exactly what the owner was looking for.

It will be the first time that Alloy Yachts have worked with the Sorgiovanni Design Studio. AY54 will have an interior designed by Justin Redman of Redman Whiteley Dixon, with a delivery scheduled for late 2014.

Alloy Yachts currently have three yachts under construction: Only months away from launching is AY44, a Rene Van Der Velden designed expedition style Megayacht. In the beginning of 2013 the Dubois designed Encore will be launched, for repeat customers who decided to upgrade their classic 1991 Dubois/Alloy sloop with a larger and more modern version. Nearer the end of 2013 we will see the second Mondango roll out of the yard. These repeat customers loved and missed the process of building their first Mondango so much they decided to come back to Alloy for another two years of the construction process with a new 57m (187ft) Dubois designed Ketch.

Feadship Unveils Their Anticipated Future Concept

Feadship has unveiled its latest Future Concept, an annual exploration by the brand’s designers and naval architects into the requirements of the next generation of Superyacht owners. Relativity has been created with a particular client in mind as Feadship speculates on how Albert Einstein might have used a Feadship to spread the message of knowledge and innovation around the globe.

By generating a design for a specific individual, Relativity is a clear departure from previous successful Feadship Future Concepts such as X-Stream, F-Stream, Aeon, Breathe and Qi. These were built with the generic requirements of a wide range of conceivable owners in the coming decades based on detailed market research. By taking the possible desires of a famous person from the past as the template, Relativity allowed the Feadship designers to hone in on specific areas in the same way that they do for individual owners in their everyday life.

'Client privacy is of paramount importance to us at Feadship and we can rarely if ever divulge the input that was given to us for any of our custom motoryachts,' says Francis Vermeer, head of marketing at Feadship. 'Each and every Feadship is a reflection of the bespoke wishes of the people who commission her, and these briefings remain confidential. With the Relativity project we were able to share in a fun and informative way the processes involved in designing a Feadship before the contract is even signed.'

'By combining this with the Future Concept philosophy, which already gives our people a license to think way outside the box, we have created an ingenious proposal that will entice others to pick up some of the ideas and run with them. One of Einstein's many famous quotes is that ‘imagination is more important than knowledge’. With the Relativity concept, Feadship offers a theoretical blend of innovation and know-how that could be transformed into reality with a client who shares our ambition to push the window of potential.'

While we all know that Albert Einstein was a brilliant scientist, fewer people are aware of his great passion for sailing and owned various yachts in his lifetime. 'What this eminent man would have made of a 21st-century Feadship we cannot say,' adds Vermeer. 'But as we worked on the Relativity project we're pretty sure that he would have found it a great experience. Mr Einstein was famous for having a sense of humour and it was great fun to speculate how he might have criss-crossed the oceans with his fellow scientists on a Feadship and disseminate knowledge to an expectant world.'

One of the key parameters has been fulfilled by the layout of Relativity. Her futuristic, organic drop shaped superstructure contains different decks that meet the distinctive uses for which she is designed. There is an open-plan society deck, which contains a special auditorium for giving presentations in a dynamic and creative environment.

One deck above is the intelligence deck, that includes six scientists rooms so that they can accompany the owners on their exploration voyages. Relaxation for the residents of the intelligence deck is offered in the form of a dining room and lounge. This ensures that the family deck above can remain a strictly private place for the owner and his family members and friends to enjoy a holiday in calm and luxurious surroundings. There are three VIP suites, a separate dining and lounge area and a smoking lounge in the bow for the owner to enjoy his pipe and contemplate the universe in peace. This will ensure that the large outdoor areas can offer a smoke free al fresco experience. It will also be the ideal place to watch guests who dare take the 4th dimension slide, which runs half the length of the yacht and allows guests to splash into the ocean at something close to the speed of light.

Icon Yachts New Expedition Concept

Icon Yachts have just introduced their new innovative and revolutionary design, 'EXPOSE'. This ultra modern 120m (394ft) expedition Superyacht is a new project by Icon Yachts in collaboration with Impossible Productions Ink. Her unique exterior styling is influenced by the modern supercars of today, giving those crisp angled lines.

According to Jen Wartena, Managing Director of Icon Yachts,' there is an increased demand for these type of Super Yachts. “Previously the demand for yachts was predominantly focused on the 60m yachts. Lately, we have received an increased requests for Super Yachts of 100m and up. Our shipyard and our team of experienced people are perfectly equipped to meet such demand. We have extensive expertise built up over the past years and with our yard located right at open sea, it is easy for these type of Yachts to be built here and set sail right away.'

One of her most innovative features is the separation between her hull and floating superstructure. This is emphasized by the glass main deck level through which all the entertainment, pool and spa spaces are located. The double height grand entrance at the front, when arriving by helicopter is also part of this open entertainment level.

She also features 2 helicopter pads including one helicopter hangar forward, a 8.5m submarine option, Icon aircraft, 14m tender, expansive tender garages, luxury supercar and art exhibit space, inside outside pool with glass bottom, infinity Jacuzzi, full deck of panoramic pool, a 900sqm spa & entertainment space, panoramic Saloon, 3D surround cinema, panoramic viewing pod on sundeck, wine cellar, humidor and chef's table.

Her interior layout provides the guests and owner with floor to ceiling windows, generous vertical connections and void spaces, creating the feeling of loft style living. 'The uniqueness of this layout and arrangement wrapped by the striking and well poised superstructure is the signature we recognized in the talented design team of Impossible Productions Ink, New York. We are extremely excited to present this and proud to be working with such pedigree.' Stephan Vitus, Head of Project Development.

Heesen Present New Designs in Monaco

On September 19 in the Principality of Monaco, Heesen directors Fabio Ermetto and Hans Boerakker, together with Piet and Perry van Oossanen from Van Oossanen Naval Architects and Frank Laupman from Omega Architects gathered at the Yacht Club de Monaco to present the new Heesen range to the yachting community.

Fabio Ermetto, Director of Sales and Marketing said: 'Heesen is moving in a new direction. In fact, four new directions. And in doing so, we want to ensure that different means better. Our four concepts have advantages over every other yacht built at their size: 65m, 55m, 45m and 42m. New considerations are becoming a priority and innovative technology is required. Working with the most radical thinkers, these four yacht forms were developed to overcome seemingly opposing attributes: to go faster but use less fuel, to increase range and speed, to increase performance but reduce environmental impact, to enable uncompromised interior design without compromising performance.'
65m
The 65m (213ft) FDHF Project Omnia was presented in 2010 at the YCM and right after it was sold to a Heesen repeat client. Researched by the world’s leading maritime engineers, the 65’s revolutionary fast displacement hull is the most efficient yet tested. This yacht has the highest power to weight ratio of any comparable yacht. Efficiency is the most important element for yachts of the future, for the very simple reason that it delivers something utterly remarkable: higher performance and lower running costs. The delivery of the largest Heesen to date is slated for June 2013.
55m
The 55m (180ft) FDHF is the world’s first steel yacht over 50m with a fast displacement hull. She is the most fuel efficient yacht of her size and style available on the market. With an impressive sundeck of 110 square metres and a forward touch and go helipad of 70sqm, she offers a wide range of choices in her layout.
45m
The Heesen 45m (148ft) is the only big sports yacht built in Holland, boasting Dutch quality, an aluminium hull and power that can deliver 30 kts. A staggering feat of naval architecture: 40m of deck space, 30m of interior space in a yacht of 45m overall. The Heesen 45m is the perfect combination of both power and style.

42m
The 42m (138ft) FDHF equipped with Hull Vane® is the most dramatic advance in yachting: The first yacht that harnesses waves to produce power. Thanks to a special underwater wing developed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects, her efficiency is increased by an astonishing 35% for speeds up to 15.9kts. Cruising speed fuel consumption is reduced by 30% and she has a 4.000nm range, the longest of any 40m yacht. Reduced emissions means reduced environmental impact. The first Heesen 42m with Hull Vane was sold last May and is due for delivery in 2014.

H2 Yacht Design's 110m 'Atlas'

Some words come to mind when looking at the new concept design by H2 Yacht Design & laurent Giles Superyacht Architecture; (Wow, Massive, Spectacular, Mind-blowing). The collaboration between between these two parties has seen the development of project Atlas, a modern motor Superyacht that utilises the efficiencies of sailing. With these gigantic sails she will exploit the obvious fuel saving and green benefits. When she uses both motor and sails she can cruise at a speed of 14kts, with a possible fuel saving of 40% to 60% along with and increase in range. Under motor alone she can reach a maximum speed of 18kts with a range of 8,000nm.

She will measure 110m (360ft) and comply of 5 decks which all blend perfectly to show smooth exterior lines. Will Atlas appeal to an owner looking to build one of the largest sailing yachts in the world? maybe the concept will sell at the Monaco Yacht Show this week, we will have to wait and find out.

Owen Clarke Yacht Design's New 130's

Owen Clarke Design LLP is recognised as being at the leading edge of high performance sailboat design. They are particularly known as pioneers in the field of canting, lifting, and lifting/canting keels for racing and cruising boats. Now they have used their infamous design skills to design two new 40m (130ft) Superyachts, one is a cruiser-racer design while the other is a full on blue water cruiser.

Cruiser-Racer Design 130

The sleek lined cruiser-racer concept is for an owner who likes to have a stylish cruiser with a clean deck appearance for sailing the blue waters of the Mediterranean or the Caribbean, but also has the racing hull design and performance equipment for competing in the famous Rolex Superyacht circuit.

She has a raised deck saloon so that owner and guests have plenty of space for relaxation and interaction. Built into her luxurious interior are 3 guest cabins and an owners cabin aft with access to a private saloon and aft deck area. One of her top features is the navigation area in the main saloon, which is situated so that the navigator has full panoramic views out over the deck for ocean voyages.

Specifications:
  • Length: 40m (130ft)
  • Beam: 9.15m (30ft)
  • Draft: 6.00m (20ft)
  • Displacement: 118 tonnes
  • Sail area: 838m2

Blue Water Cruiser 130

The blue water cruiser is for the owner who wishes to take advantage of his passion of sailing while keeping his family and guests satisfied. She is modern, functional, luxurious and capable of fast transoceanic passages, making her the perfect home at anchor in remote tropical bays. Owen Clarke Design have created a great cruiser for owner and family to enjoy to her full potential while being handled by minimum crew.

Just like her more racing orientated sister she has a dreadnought bow that offers a maximum waterline length, reduces the yacht’s displacement to length ratio and provides a safer and more secure deck space to tack spinnakers and furling gennakers without the additional complication of a bowsprit.

She will be able to accommodate 10 guests including the owners in 2 guest twin cabins, 1 double, 1 VIP and a full beam owners cabin aft with private access to the aft deck.

Specifications:

  • Length: 40m (130ft)
  • Beam: 9.15m (30ft)
  • Draft: 6.00m (20ft) down, 3.8m (12ft) up
  • Displacement: 130 tonnes

Vripack's Project Liquid

Project 'Liquid Silver' has been in the the Vripack design studio pipeline for many years and it just been in recent years that it has grown to become the Vripack vision of the modern research vessel, the research vessel yacht 2.0 (RVY). Her internal project name has long been Turmoil II. The main reason for this is her striking long forward bow being the boat deck, just like Vripack's previous RVY 1.0.

Her main deck blends into the her raised striking long bow to give clean flowing exterior lines while the practical location of her deck is still there. She has a closed transom just like the RVY 1.0, but Liquid Silver opens up to revival a complete beach club area. This is by no means an innovative idea on the Superyachts of today, but recent studies by Vripack with owners and crew clearly show the need for this recreational spot.

The layout of Liquid Silver continues on the success of other Vripack explorers with a crew deck above the waterline but under the main deck. Guest and general social functions on the main deck with the owner's deck above, creating a complete private walk around. The bridge deck is the next deck up and on top of that an observation deck. Vripack say 'Never change a winning layout' and we agree when it works it works.

Specifications
  • Length: 85m (279ft)
  • Beam: 14.30m (47ft)
  • Draft: 4m (13ft)
  • Materials: Steel/Aluminium
  • Design: Vripack

Feadships 'Go' To Visit French Yacht Shows

The beautiful little 39m (128ft) Feadship G0, will be taking up residence in the French Rivera for the month of September as she attends the Cannes Boat Show and the Monaco Yacht Show. She has been acting as one of Feadships flagships in their charter fleet for the past year, but Feadship are now making her available for sale at a reduced price of €21.9 million Euro.

She has recently been given a new fresh interior layout by Sinot Yacht Design which gives her a modern natural feel. She has all the quality and distinct exterior styling of a larger Feadship, that has been condensed down into the perfect more manageable little Superyacht that she is.

She will be at anchor in the bay of Cannes during the Cannes Boat Show from 11th to 16th September (Vieux Port & Port Pierre Canto), where she is available for viewing by appointment only. Two days after the show she will pull into Monaco, where she will be berthed at E15 for the show which starts on the 19th and runs until the 22nd. Trinity Yachts Launch 'Lady Sura'

Last week on the 7th of September, Trinity Yachts announced the launch of their newest addition to their ever growing 50m (164ft) series. She was christened Lady Sura and was custom built with an aluminium hull and superstructure. We were happy to see that she wasn't damaged during the recent hurricane and that there was only very minor damage to the yard in Gulfport.

These beautiful 164s have distinctive oval windows in the bow and long sharp flowing windows on each deck. She features a full beam two level master suite on the main deck with forward panoramic viewing windows, four guest staterooms located below on the lower deck and one VIP guest stateroom on the bridge deck. The interior was designed by Patrick Knowles, who uses Anigre and mahogany in a variety of finishes to create the owners vision.

She will have a top speed of over 19 kts with a 4,000nm range at displacement speeds for extended cruising. Her draft of 7’8” (2.4m) enables her to frequent shallow water harbors and ports, making island hopping easy and accessible.

Palumbo Shipyard's Refit Division

The Palumbo Shipyard in Naples is developing a stronghold in the Superyacht refit business, and has also created a new Division.

The yard, that has established its brand Columbus Yachts on the international Superyacht Market, is now extending its capabilities also in the refit business in order to offer even wider services to the owners and also to supply a support to Palumbo Malta Superyacht.

The yard has been operating since 1967 and has seen in the last few years a great expansion in Italy and in Malta refit market. The other yard owned by Palumbo, the yard in Malta, is one of the biggest Superyacht refit yard in the Mediterranean. Feadship's Future Concept

As with true Feadship tradition, the 2012 Feadship Future Concept will be unveiled on the opening morning of the Monaco Yacht Show. And, as was the case with predecessors such as X-Stream, F-Stream, Aeon, Breathe and Qi, the design takes a highly imaginative approach to the likely requirements and desires of the next generation of superyacht owners.

There is a slight twist in the 2012 Feadship Future Concept, she comes with a client. He is a man who is globally acknowledged as an unrivaled genius in his field, a leading individual who likes nothing more than to push the window of innovation and stretch the boundaries of the possible, finally he is a client able to combine theory with practice with effortless ease.

A great fan of sailing yachts who is now exploring the options for a motoryacht: A Feadship that will criss-cross the oceans, enabling him to explore the world.

'All Feadship owners are assured of maximum privacy and we cannot reveal the identity of this new potential client at this stage,' says Francis Vermeer, head of marketing at Feadship. 'However, there are strong rumours that he will attend the Monaco show in person. And as this man is also renowned for his enormous sense of humour, this promises to be a memorable occasion for all concerned.'

Feadship are teasing readers with the only image of the design below (your imagination will come in handy), so I guess we will have to wait until the Monaco Yacht Show that starts on the 19th and runs until the 22nd to find out more.
