Cruse Design 187m 'The Other Azzam Design'

The massive 187m (613ft) concept design by Jens Cruse of Cruse Design from Hamburg Germany was one of the concept designs presented to the current client of the recently moved Lurssen built, project 'Azzam'.

Cruse Design developed the concept with a leading German yacht manufacture for the client, a reported ruler who likes to visit his Island that is surrounded by shallow waters. This would suggest why project Azzam is water jet/gas turbine powered. One of the main and rare features with this concept was the yachts tender, a 35m (115ft) Pershing that would be house inside in the aft garage (see the above picture), it puts in perspective the sheer size of this 187m concept.

Tom Perkins 37m Classic Yacht 'Atlantide' For Sale

Atlantide, Tom Perkins beautiful Gentlemen's yacht has just been listed for sale with yacht brokerage Freedom Marine for €5,000,000m. She is steeped in history, with owner and crew that kept her in pristine condition over the years, she is arguably the best yacht in the 30-40m range on the market today.

She was launched in 1930 by Philip and Sons in Dartmouth, UK. She measures 37m (122ft) in length and was originally designed by the famous English naval architect Alfred Mylne (the designer of the original Royal Yacht Britannia) for Sir William Burton. Burton was a distinguished yachtsman, who was helmsman of the J-Class yacht Shamrock IV. In 1939 Atlantide was requisitioned into the Royal Navy and in 1940 she joined the fleet of little ships to evacuate the allied forces from Dunkirk harbor and surrounding beaches. She set out for Dunkirk on May 31st and upon reaching Dunkirk she operated under intense enemy shell fire and dive bomber attacks over seven days during which she assisted various vessels.

Tom Perkins bought Atlantide in 1998 and put her through a complete rebuild. Her hull was reconstructed at the Manoel Island Shipyard of Malta and the new superstructure and interior was restored and fitted out by Camper and Nicholson in the UK. Ken Freivokh Design took the job of bringing her external and art deco interior design back to life (that can be clearly seen in the below image).

Palumbo Launch 30m Tug 'Vervece'

Last week in Naples, the Palumbo Shipyard launched 'Vervece' a beautifully designed 30m (98ft) tug boat. The owner contacted the Palumbo yard to perform the conversion of this 1960s tug into a luxury exploring yacht. The conversion consisted of replacing the old hull plates and installing a totally new superstructure that blends perfectly with the tugs hull lines, this makes Vervece an 80% new build. Also all of her systems were overhauled and renewed.

She has a beam of 7.70m (25ft) and 2 Cummins engines with a power of 746Kw at 1,800rpm that bring her to a cruising speed of 12kts with a range of 3,000nm. She is now charter classed and MCA compliant.

Sanlorenzo's 46m 'Achilles' Moves Along The Streets

The city of Massa-Carrara (which is where the third Sanlorenzo shipyard is located in addition to the yards in Ameglia and Viareggio) saw the amazing night transportation of Sanlorenzo's fourth 46m (151ft) Megayacht 'Achilles' through the town to the launching facility by the water on the other side.

A specialist team navigated Achilles to the Carrara Marina, across roads which usually never see a Megayacht of this size, if one at all. Once at the marina she was launched with a special floating metal platform that supported her whilst gently lowering her into the water. Achilles is the fourth yacht in the series that has been delivered from a total of six that have been sold.

She is similar in layout to the previous three 46m yachts in the series complying of three decks, the main deck, upper deck and the sky lounge which have all been constructed from aluminium. Her fully displacement steel hull has two more decks, the lower deck for guest and crew accommodation. and the under lower deck where the service and technical zones are located.

She will be powered by two Caterpillar 2,040hp engines that will give a maximum speed of 17kts and a cruising speed of 15kts. At 12kts she will have a range of 4,000nm.

Into The Future: The Superyacht Sub

A look into the future with the amazingly innovative hybrid 2021 concept design by Edwin van der Mark from the Netherlands, where he combines the perfect crossover between Superyacht and submarine. The concept arose by Edwin van der Mark visiting the superyacht pavilion at METS in Amsterdam in November 2011, where he met Harley O'Neill of SuperyachtME, an ex US Navy Fast Attack Submarine Navigator. They shared some creative ideas of creating a concept where superyacht meets submarine, then the 103m (338ft) concept was brought to life on a yellow post it note before it was developed digitally.

When she is above the surface and being the Superyacht side of her design the two big structural units open out like the wings of an exotic beetle to reveal the numerous sun decks aft, where guests can relax while at anchor or moving at cruising speed. The roof hatch above the owners deck opens up to let in sunlight and stays open as long as she is above the surface. She will also feature a gym, swimming pool, jacuzzi, beach club and a lounge/bar area at the stern.

The top deck features the owners private retreat which includes a complete penthouse on two private decks, with a hidden sundeck forward complete with Jacuzzi. On the top level there is a helipad and a small hangar to store the helicopter. The crew and guest accommodation is located amidships and also includes a movie theatre, an indoor swimming pool and a gym/studio. A remarkable feature is in the keel of the vessel, where subsea hatches and moon pools are able to launch a mini subs or divers to explore the underwater world.

Above the surface she can reach speeds of 30-35 kts with the top decks open, or an eco mode cruising speed of about 25 kts, with all decks and the stern open.

Its only a concept but it has opened doors to a new way of thinking as to the future direction of Superyacht design, Edwin will bring dreams that were thought impossible to reality.

MY Golden Odyssey To The Rescue

Photo by: Michael Pocock of Maritime Quest

Yesterday the 80m (262ft) Superyacht Golden Odyssey came to the rescue of a stranded fishing vessel in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Costa Rica. The 30ft fishing vessel Maria Christina had apparently been adrift for eight days before they were rescued. The three crew who are believed to be Costa Rican nationals were all ok at the time of rescue and are currently under tow back towards Cocos Island by Golden Odyssey where another local boat, Gaviota, will take over for the final leg back to land.

The fishing vessel had left from the Cocos Island a nature reserve 550km off the coast of Costa Rica and then got into trouble during their trip. The distance they were off shore and the full extent of the of the problems they encountered are unknown at this time.

Golden Odyssey was custom built in 1990 by the German shipyard Blohm and Voss, and has a exterior designed by Platou Architects and interior by Alberto Pinto. She has a max speed of 18kts and an amazing range of over 9,000nm at 16kts.

A big shout out and congratulations has to go out to the crew of Golden Odyssey, Well Done

Scottish Patrol Vessel Gets New Lease Of Life

The Atlantic Refit Center (ARC) in the beautiful town of La Rochelle in the west of France has started a major conversion on MY Norna, a 72m (236ft) ex Scottish patrol vessel. We love to see projects like this when old yachts get a new lease of life to explore the world by an enthusiastic and passionate owner. Sunreef's New 85ft Power Design

Sunreef Yachts have just introduced their new design for the 85ft (26m) power which will be formally introduced during the Monaco Yacht Show in September. This modern design will bridge the gap between their successful 70ft range and their larger custom series, and will be another milestone in the world of luxury catamarans.

One thing that you can say about the ultra modern 85 is that she definitely has the WOW factor, and her design introduction will be a major hit at the Monaco Yacht Show. The main idea of this concept is to stress the large amount of space catamarans have compared to mono hulls of similar size. This means one huge deck spans the entire beam of the yacht and features a dining area, lounge areas and a saloon that all come together with the exterior aft deck to create a seamless open space. The spacious master cabin will be located forward on the main deck, just showing you the space this 85 has. The rest of the guest accommodation and crew quarters will be located on the lower decks in the hulls.

The flybridge will include the helm station and two lounging areas both inside and out, while the front outside deck includes a jacuzzi and sun pads. She will feature a beach club and swimming platform aft, which is an unusual feature to be seen on a catamaran due to the multi hull configuration. This platform will allow guests to relax at sea level while at anchor and will provide easy access to all the water toys and tender that will be stored on board.

She is a sleek modern sporty design that is sure to create a stir in the Superyacht industry when hull number 1 is launched in the future.

Canados Launch 120ft 'Far Away'

On July the 16th Canados Yachts launched their flagship the 36m (120ft) 'Far Away'. She was launched at at the yard outside Rome in quite a special ceremony as it was celebrated by a Russian Orthodox priest as requested by the owners. More than 60 guests attended the ceremony including her Russian owners who will cruise through the Mediterranean in the coming months.

Far Away's naval architecture and exterior styling was designed by an in house team, but the interior styling and layout was left to the creative mind of Francesco Paszkowski Design. The yachts sleek lines combined with new distinctive features will make her stand out, whether on the dock or at anchor in the owners favorite bay. She features four fold down terraces on the main deck which will expand the social space for guests as well as providing the perfect little sun traps. She has a full teak beach club complete with showers and heads aft, a spacious exterior living area forward on the main deck with sofa and sunbathing area, and an advanced entertainment and communications system that can be controlled through an iPad.
Paszkowski has created the interior with the use of oak, ebony, stone and titanium and a selection of different grey colours to complement the materials. There are no pictures of the interior yet but the above rendering shows the layout and style of the main saloon. Her accommodation layout is somewhat out of the ordinary with 2 VIP owners cabins and a guest cabin on the lower deck, and a second guest cabin located on the main deck where usually you will find the owners master suite.

She is reported to be powered by 2 2,400hp MTU engine package that can bring her to a max speed of 29kts and a cruising speed of 25kts.

Trinity Yachts Deliver 187ft 'Lady Linda'

After her successful launch at the end of last year 2011, Trinity have just completed the handover/delivery of the 57m (187ft) Lady Linda to her new owners a couple from Florida. Since being delivered she has crossed the Atlantic for a summer of fun in the Mediterranean where she will also attended the Monaco Yacht Show in September.

The owners knew exactly what they wanted when they went to build their third Trinity and the most important features were that she needed to be built for docking behind their Florida residence and capable of handling the shallow waters of the Bahamas. Trinity accomplished the shallow water cruising with an expansive beam of 10.2m (33.4ft) that allowed for a 2.4m (8ft) draft. This will allow Lady Linda cruise in shallow waters, enter shallow berths, port and destinations which are generally unavailable to yachts of this size.

Her accommodation includes a full beam owners suite forward on the main deck which includes his and her showers and a full office. There are 4 guest cabins on the lower deck with great sea views in each cabin which are spacious, all en suite and are decorated with granite, marble and soft earthy colours, and all designed by interior designer Evan Marshall of London. There is also a gym behind the bridge that can be changed into a 5th guest cabin if needed to raise the number of guest accommodation to 12.

Photo: Alex Pfotenhauer

One unique feature to her design is the floor to ceiling doors on the sundeck to deflect the wind away from the guests, a first in design for Trinity. The sundeck also features a large bar and seating area, a hot tub, a touch and go helipad and a davit suitable for rescue tender, jet skis and water toys. There is plenty of space throughout the yacht for guest to relax and socialize, be it in the main saloon, sky lounge or out on the aft decks. If you are in the Med this summer keep a close lookout for her, currently she is anchored just off Cannes in the South of France.

Princess Yachts 40m Takes Maiden Voyage

The largest production yacht ever launched in Britain, with the largest resin-infused hull ever moulded, the new Princess 40M (131ft) has been making headlines ever since the Plymouth yacht builder announced plans for her some three years ago. Now, after a successful launch, commissioning and compliance to Class and Flag in Plymouth, hull No.1 Imperial Princess, is on her maiden voyage to the warmer waters of the Mediterranean.

She had to make a small pit stop in Jersey, Channel Islands where she was formally handed over to her owner by Chris Cleverly and Nigel James of Princess Motor Yacht Sales together with Chris Gates, Managing Director of Princess Yachts International. After the hand over was complete she was on her way south to the med where she made some light work of the large seas in the Bay of Biscay. After she reaches the Med she will be attending the Festival de la Plaisance in Cannes this September and a few days later the famous Monaco Yacht Show.

The owner of Imperial Princess has chosen the five cabin option with two VIP double cabins and two twin cabins all en suite, which are situated on the lower deck. These cabins will have large side windows that let in plenty of natural light. The fifth cabin is the owners full beam cabin which is forward on the main deck and is accessed through a versatile room which can be specified as an office, private TV room or a reading room to suit the owner’s personal requirements.

The main deck will include the main saloon, formal dining area, a professional galley which was designed to the exact brief of a professional chef and hydraulically folding balconies on both sides of the saloon. On the third deck there is an elegant sky lounge and an exterior dining area for private drinks and al fresco dining. A curved stairway leads up to the sun deck complete with bar, seating, sunbathing and a jacuzzi.

Her interior was designed by Princess in collaboration with the London studio of Bannenberg & Rowell. Her interior will have a variety of different woods, granites, stones, and fabrics to give a classic look of contrasting tones, textures and surfaces.

Hull No.2 is already progressing well and hull No.3 has just completed her infusion. Each will be completely individual as within the parameters of the structure, with the owners able to construct the yacht of their dreams. No two yachts will ever be the same.

Earlier this week the 115m Luna entered the 1000 island region on the Canadian/US boarder and in the same week the 126m Octopus passed Blankenese on her approach to Hamburg Germany. The below video was captured by an onlooker and shows Octopus at her best.

Octopus was built by lurssen in 2003 and is currently sits at number 14 in the worlds top 100 Superyachts. She measures a total length of 126m (414ft) and can reach a top speed of 20kts. Some features include 2 submarines, a basketball court, swimming pool, cinema and not one but two helipads. Her exterior was designed by Espen Oenio and designer Jonathan Quinn Barnett was responsible for her interior design. Her owner, Microsoft co founder Paul Allen uses this expedition yacht to her potential and travels the world, as she was spotted in the Maldives at the start of the year. She was designed by Perini Navi’s in house naval architects in collaboration with New Zealander Ron Holland who lives in West Cork, Ireland.

Her sail plan, designed and built by the Perini Navi's Mast Department, totals over 1,400 square meters and is handled through 11 reel captive winches. The main and mizzen masts measure 56.7m and a 43m respectively, and are in aluminium while the furling boom and spreaders are in carbon fibre.

The hull has an aft opening that becomes a beach platform, where beach clubs are vastly becoming part of every Superyacht design. The 19ft main tender is stored under the fore deck in a flush tender well that also stores a catamaran that can be quickly rigged for day sailing. The superstructure has been completely redesigned with two large skylights in the roof.
